May 2020 Camping Signup

posted Jan 7, 2020, 5:57 PM by Troop Webmaster

One of the camping events we have planned for this spring is attending the NJ State Police camporee. This camporee comes around every three years and is a massive event (estimate this year is 10,000 participants). When we’ve done this in the past it is a popular weekend with the scouts.

The camporee is at the State Police Academy in Sea Girt, and this year they need to cut down the available space. For that reason the organizers are trying to get early signups so that they can plan ahead. They have adopted a sliding signup fee based on early registrations and also warned us that once they hit their maximum participant count, they’ll be shutting down registrations.

For that reason we will be opening signups for this May trip now.  The troop will be committing to slots as you register. For this reason, the registration fee should be handed in to an adult leader, not the Patrol Leader.  We will do our best to register scouts with the event as they sign up, guaranteeing a slot at the event.

We will still be collecting $15 from each scout for food when get to May.

Scoutmaster's Message: January 7, 2020

posted Jan 7, 2020, 5:49 PM by Troop Webmaster

Happy New Year!

We have a very busy few months mounting, and I just wanted to make sure everyone saves the dates! Hope everyone is rested and we look forward to seeing everyone back this Wednesday night.

I would also like to welcome our new crossover scouts! At the beginning of December, Troop 66 had 38 registered scouts and with the addition of the crossover scouts from Pack 66, we are now 54 strong! Just a reminder that if you have a friend who might be interested in joining, please invite them to any meeting.

Now onto the upcoming events we have planned. And by the way, you can always keep track of the troop calendar by visiting http://www.troop66matawan.com/calendar

Klondike Derby- January 18, 2020

As I said last week, the Klondike Derby is scheduled for January 18th at Quail Hill Scout Reservation (QHSR). Scouts will meet at the Matawan United Methodist Church (MUMC) at 7 am and will depart soon after that. Parents may be asked to help drive scouts down to the Manalapan camp. Pick up for everyone will be from QHSR directly at approximate 4 pm.

The Essentials of Merit Badges- February 5, 2020

Troop 66 will be putting on a seminar for both scouts and parents about the essentials of merit badges on Wednesday, February 5th starting around 7:45 pm at the MUMC. This is a critical meeting for all scouts and parents and will explain the merit badge process which is a vital part of Boy Scout advancement. More information to follow.

Scout Sunday- February 9, 2020

We will have our annual Scout Sunday on February 9th at Matawan United Methodist Church. Scouts will meet in their full Class A uniform at 9:15. This is a family event and scouts should remember that "A Scout is Reverent". More information to come.

State Police & National Guard Camporee- May 29-31, 2020

It's time again for the NJ State Police and National Guard Camporee the weekend of May 29-31st in Sea Girt. This is a highlight trip, and registration will open later this month. There is an early registration because they limit the number of scouts who attend.

Spring Court of Honor- June 3, 2020

I know it's a long way up, but the Spring & Fall courts of honor are an opportunity for us to celebrate the advancement of our scouts. The next one is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3rd at 7:30 pm at the MUMC. More information to come.

Family Picnic- June 13, 2020

The annual Family Picnic has been scheduled for Saturday, June 13th at 12 noon at the MUMC. We know this is a busy time with graduations, which is why we're telling you now. More information to follow.

Summer Camp at Forestburg Scout Reservation- July 12-18, 2020

I know families are starting to plan their summer vacations, but please remember that summer camp is an important part of the scouting year and a big part of the scouts advancement and development. Every year we spend a week at our "home away from home' at Forestburg Scout Reservation (FSR) and this year it will be from July 12-18th. We're very excited because not only will we have the Bob Shea pavilion ready, but FSR has hired a new camp program director (Coach has retired), and we're expecting great things. More information to come.

Scoutmaster's Message: Nov 5, 2019

Scoutmaster's Message

Troop 66 is off to another great year! I just wanted to share a few things with you that we have in the works this fall & winter.

Bob Shea Memorial Pavilion

As you all know, the Troop 66 committee has been busy working on a new 20' x 40' pavilion in our Forstburg Scout Reservation campsite Onondaga. With your continued support, the work crew has finished putting up the frame and rafters of the structure and the final roof will be placed in the spring. I would like to personally thank the adults, listed below, for their hard work and dedication in the construction.

Our crew (alphabetical order):

Dan A.
Damian B.
George C.
Nick D.Sr.
Nick D. Jr.
Fred G.
Ken K.
Joseph L.
Scott M.
Don M.
Brian M.
Rich P.
Mike S.

This pavilion, which will be ready for summer camp this year, is a perfect meeting place for our scouts and will be used for years to come. This shelter is also an important part of the FSR safety plan and will be used as a hard shelter in case of storms, similar to the ones we experienced this summer.

This shelter is still not complete and your financial support is still needed. To make a donation, please click here

We all know that Bob will be watching over us while we write a new chapter for the troop with this new pavilion.

Community Service

We all know that community service is important, not only as scouts but as citizens of our communities. With this in mind, Troop 66 has a service project scheduled for this Saturday, November 9th from 9 to 11 am behind the Chevy's Dry Cleaners on Main Street, Matawan. Similar to our last project in this area, we will be going into the woods near the lake to pick up trash before it enters our waterways.

For more information and to sign up, please click here.

November Camping

Sign-up is now available for the November 2019 camping trip to be held from November 15-17, 2019 at Citta Scout Reservation. This camping trip will include our annual Fryfest and will include scouts skills practice and our annual ILST training for the patrol leaders and ASPL's. As an added bonus, we will have 10+ Cub Scouts from Pack 66 visiting us in hopes of joining us after their crossover in December. Attendance is highly encouraged!

To sign up, please click here.

December Family Trip

Every year we try and have a trip which is fun for the entire family. This year the Patrol Leader's Council (PLC) and the Troop committee have selected a visit to the Statue of Liberty on December 14, 2019.

To sign up, please click here.

Annual Dues

The annual dues and rechartering letter has been set out and the deadline is this November 27th in preparation of our annual rechartering process with the National Boy Scouts of America. As you heard at the Fall Court of Honor, the cost for this year has gone up because of a new Monmouth Council Program Fee; which will bring the Troop 66 registration fee up to $130. To help make this easier for families, we are now offering online payments with a credit card.

Please click here to make your online payment.

We are also asking you to fill out the re-chartering application and Code of Conduct so we keep our records up to date.

The Troop 66 leadership is hard at working planning and keeping the scouts busy. I would like to take a moment to thank them for their hard work and dedication.
